Even the name Five Nights At Freddys sounds spooky!
Not much of a computer gamer but my son got me playing this two nights ago. What I liked about it (except - it's a little bit creepy!) is that conserving energy is one of the objectives of the game. When you get down to zero power (from closing the doors or turning on lights to check which spooky fellow's outside) you lose. It was very Dr Who-esque a la the Angels who move in an instant when you blink. Don't know whether it was cooked up by greenies or not. Of course this greenie managed to run out of electricity by opening and closing the doors and checking the CCT cameras too often. You drain the power grid, lights go off - boom you get devoured by a spooky toy character. Fun stuff. Well, I wonder how many other computer games incorporate more subtle conservation themes. It might be more ideal if an environmentally friendly act isn't the main objective as depending on the demographic, it can be a tad 'uncool' to be green focussed, as a youngster.

In support of this momentously huge campaign taking over the world over 21 September globally, Neil Young wrote this wonderful anthem.
Play it on this link at Democracy Now. http://www.democracynow.org/blog/2014/9/19/exclusive_listen_to_neil_youngs_new Who’s Gonna Stand Up Protect the wild, tomorrow’s child Protect the land from the greed of man Take down the dams, stand up to oil Protect the plants, and renew the soil Who’s gonna stand up and save the earth? Who’s gonna say that she’s had enough? Who’s gonna take on the big machine? Who’s gonna stand up and save the earth? This all starts with you and me Damn the dams, save the rivers Starve the takers and feed the givers Build a dream, save the world We’re the people know as earth Who’s gonna stand up and save the earth? Who’s gonna say that she’s had enough? Who’s gonna take on the big machine? Who’s gonna stand up and save the earth? This all starts with you and me Ban fossil fuel, draw the line Before we build, one more pipeline Ban fracking now, save the waters And build a life, for our sons and daughters Who’s gonna stand up and save the earth? Who’s gonna say that she’s had enough? Who’s gonna take on the big machine? Who’s gonna stand up and save the earth? This all starts with you and me Who’s gonna stand up Who’s gonna stand up Who’s gonna stand up Who’s gonna stand up Who’s gonna stand up This is a link to a booklet which is essential reading for teachers in the field of Environmental education aka Education for Sustainability - entitled Environmental Education Activities for Primary Schools (UNESCO - UNEP).
http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0009/000963/096345eo.pdf What impresses you about this booklet is its sheer size and the range of topics and activities that it covers - from Wind Energy (creating mock gadgets and models) to Habitats and Wildlife. What distinguishes Converse Conserve from other sustainability ideas sites is that we wish to encourage children and young people to get involved in their education projects rather than sitting back and being spoon-fed. We don't believe in EfS simply following a 'curriculum of environmental learning' as this can be dull, didactic and too narrow. At Converse Conserve, we believe education has to be both 'informational' and 'inspirational' noting all the causal drivers that bear on human behaviour: intellectual, functional, moral, sensual, emotional, psychic, sub-conscious drivers. We go further and want older pupils to be involved in creating learning activities for younger students in a way that students feel inspired, and enlivened to act by their engagement with the material. In the meantime, here is a fun cartoon sourced from Wikimedia commons dating back to 1943 promoting car-pooling obviously at a time of 'fuel rationing'. |
